The East Coast of Sri Lanka, coming alive since the middle of 2009 which was when the 30 year civil war of Sri Lanka came to an end, the region is now growing into quite the beach holiday hot spot. The east is the only region in Sri Lanka which can boast of the white sands which cover the wide and tranquil beaches. The region is also home to an abundance of fauna and flora, but the main attractions of the east roam the waters off shore, the playful dolphins and majestic blue whales and sperm whales call the waters of the east home. The region sports many institutes which allow visitors to be part of a sea safari to view these awesome creatures.

The East Coast of Sri Lanka, boasts some of the most beautiful shores on the island, the island’s eastern coast spans the edge of the Eastern Province which spans an area of 9996 square kilometers. The capital of the east is Trincomalee, a region which was previously rarely visited by local and foreign tourists due to the islands civil war which ended in mid 2009. The end of the war signaled a new period of growth for the entire east coast, new hotels, resorts and recreational facilities right along the eastern coast have sprouted welcoming the world to the island’s white sandy beaches and warm tropical waters. The eastern coast of Sri Lanka also introduces visitors to a pallet of diverse cultures and traditions from the usually experienced traditions of the western regions of the island.

Famous locations of the east coast include Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Batticaloa, Kalkudah, Passikudah and Arugam Bay. The east coast is home to some of the region’s largest lagoons namely the Batticaloa, Kokkilai, Upaar and Ullackalie lagoons. The region is part of a smart, modern and eco friendly development style and many of the hotels and resort s of the region make the most of their natural surroundings, building around them and incorporating them rather than modifying them. Fauna and flora are plentiful in the east, but the best sights are experienced in the waters off of the eastern coast, ranging from a myriad of colourful fish in the shallows to the world’s smartest aquatic mammals; the dolphin and the largest creature on earth the blue and sperm whales, which frequent the waters of the island’s eastern shores. The region is truly a newly discovered gem growing brighter with every visit.
